What if MAGA is not merely a political movement, but a restoration theology shaped by white messianic longing, apocalyptic fear, and the salvific promise of supremacy itself? To understand Christian nationalism, we must stop treating it as political hypocrisy and begin examining it as racialized messianic theology.
As a child of the Black Protestant orthodox traditions of Pentecostalism & Baptist faith, my theist belief was formed by one faith and one baptism. And it was a faith whose orthodoxy included both a deep contempt for and reverence of the Israelites as God’s chosen people. It was for me a tradition that both blindly supported Israel and that called the Holocaust the Jewish penance of sin for rejecting Jesus as the messiah.
This matters here because in my faith deconstruction I’ve come to understand Judaism as a religion of memory keeping. A faith bound by a persecuted people under constant threat of extinction who refuse to forget their memories of God both as creator and cache. I see it as a faith that never forgets to remember because it understands the power of vigilant witness across generations.
And orthodox Christianity all but erases the very real quandary of Jesus for the many Jewish communities under Roman occupation. It erases that messianic hope was not abstract longing for a soul extraction from hell—as hell is a concept of Christian invention. For these communities messianic hope was materially tied to: liberation, restored sovereignty, national protection, political deliverance, and reordered social power.
And part of why Jesus was rejected by many as the Messiah is because he did not fulfill those expectations in the way anticipated. He did not restore earthly Jewish political rule under empire.
That’s not unlike what I experience as a member of the Black diaspora under present empire.
If we are honest, Black Christianity has wrestled with this same tension for generations. Many Black believers are increasingly questioning a messianic framework that promises heaven while leaving empire materially intact below. We know intimately what it means to long for liberation and inherit delay instead.
When Whiteness Develops a Messiah
But I ask you to consider this: what happens when whiteness develops its own messianic longing? I’ve spoken before about when white supremcy is bigger than God.
We keep scratching our heads wondering how we could be in this current state. It seems absolutely illogical and contradictory until you ask this question. It is then that you realize
MAGA is not merely political nostalgia.
It is restorationist theology.
Which means the administration functions symbolically not merely as government but as liberator, avenger, restorer, boundary enforcer, empire protector, and as covenant renewer for whiteness itself.
And in all of these things, it becomes the fulfillment of messianic promise. And once you understand that? “The Great White Messiah” stops sounding like my provocation made merely for shock and it starts sounding terrifyingly correct in its analytical framing.
Why Cruelty Does Not Disqualify
Sure, we’ve named him as Antichrist. We keep begging Christians to explain the seeming contradictions of their adoration and his holy anointing by their own hands.
And yet the many communities who’ve suffered under its boot heel have answered repeatedly that the answer is simple:
White supremacy does not need a sinless messiah. It needs an effective one.
Supremacy’s Restoration Theology
Messianic longing is developed by material conditions of oppression. And we can trace the lineage of Supremacy’s constraint reinterpreted as oppression in need of salvation.
You can trace the aggrieved heart of supremacy to the Civil Rights era as “the fall” wherein a people controlled as property in a nation whose voting system has always held property as a prerequisite of political power and voice are suddenly given one.
And we had the audacity to use it with immediacy. John Conyers of Michigan was the first Black congressperson elected immediately following the Civil Rights Act of 1964. He won his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 1964 and assumed office in January 1965, holding the seat for nearly 53 years.
And Supremacy’s wounding has been smarting since then. By 1969 Nixon himself debuts the southern strategy of The Silent Majority. where the VRA and civil rights legislation lived as perceived constraints on white social sovereignty
And of course there’s the origins of The Great Replacement Theory, their demographic anxiety serving as this theology’s apocalyptic fear.
They cling to DEI panic as perceived persecution for white existence. It is the bloodroot fear of the sins of the father being visited upon the children (Exodus 20:5, 34:7).
So then Christian nationalism is truly just another restoration theology wherein “Make America Great Again” is as an eschatological promise of a restoration of heaven as supremacy has always known it.
The Antichrist Problem
The truth is the Antichrist is no singular villain. It is a spirit that has long been indwelling this land. Because the Antichrist is a category of deception, not a single man.
The Antichrist appears within religious structures, not outside them. And the gospel here trains us as apocalyptic believers to misidentify evil.
1 John 2:18 says:“You have heard that Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come.”

The mark of the beast appeared with all clear evidence of the AntiChrist& they fell down and worshipped him as the second coming instead.
But what if I Told you that he’s only one of many Antichrists that have already come?
2 Thessalonians 2, “the man of lawlessness” or “son of perdition.” Is the Antichrist you’re likely most familiar with.
The key here is spiritual deception, not obvious evil. It’s the absence of obvious evil that works to conceal the Antichrists among us.
An Antichrist proclaims himself to be God — and sometimes that proclamation hides behind institutions that claim infallible authority in God’s name. Yes, we know that 45/47 exalts himself above every god.
Supremacy as Religion
I hope, however, that by this point I have distinguished for you the Christian faith from white civil religion, empire theologies, and racialized messianic longing.
I strive here to ask and answer one question well: what kind of faith remains possible after supremacy’s corruption?
Because the Christianity I am speaking of here is not empire’s religion of domination, hierarchy, and national purity. It is the dangerous memory carried by oppressed people who kept faith not because empire blessed them, but because it did not. It is the faith of fugitives, mourners, rebels, and witnesses who understood God not as the protector of power, but as the indictment against it.
Others lazily flatten Christian nationalism to “religion bad,” “religious people stupid,” and this is the “god problem of America.” But that ignores what I believe to be most true: supremacy is itself the oldest global religion and its god is Power made incarnate.
The efficacy of this Great White Messiah is more important than moral purity. Especially in a theology where morality is relevant only to those who arbitrate the power of the cultural and social standards.
This is why his evident cruelties are forgiven. It’s why moral incoherence with profession of Christian faith doesn’t matter either. it’s why all of his legal violations are reframed as righteousness.
It’s why supporters interpret persecution narratives so strongly and why every indictment legal or moral strengthens devotion instead of weakening it. Because messianic devotion is not based on ethical consistency. It’s based on salvific expectation.
And by all accounts He is the Great White Messiah fulfilling the promise of supremacy’s salvation.
And as for the many who desperately seek political absolution for the marring of this faith in the hands of MAGA?
The tragedy is that they taught you to await the Antichrist so intensely that you failed to recognize him when he arrived wrapped in your own theology, flag, and longing.
